While WordPress has been around a while now, I think its always a good idea to brush up on the basics…
Security!
Many people install WordPress as their default site/blog and that’s fine…it’s a great CMS, however many wordpress install are either done by the host or via a script which users can install with the click of a button after hosting is sorted. There are a few issues with this, but let’s talks about the advantages first.
Host/Script WordPress Installs
These are fast, easy and allow the user to get up and running in very little time. No effort is invested in setting up the server, database etc. etc. but there is one issue that needs to be address and that is the security aspect of this.
Change the default ‘Admin’ login name!
If it’s one thing you should do at the very LEAST is to register a new admin user-name and delete the default which ‘admin’ user. Leaving the ‘admin’ user in could leave your site vulnerable to what is know as ‘brute force’ attacks. These are attacks where an individual/machine tried to gain access to your site by attempting to hack your password. Although no password is foolproof it’s best to provide as much protection as possible and leave little to chance!
